Yala national park is one of the oldest and second-largest wildlife reserves in Sri Lanka. It is a wetland sanctuary of such importance that it has been recognised under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Bundala harbours 197 species of birds, the highlight being the greater flamingo, which migrates in large flocks.

The best time to go on safari in Bundala National Park is from mid-December to March, when the bird life is very active, especially with the arrival of migrant birds. However, other months are also good for bird watching, except for the migrant birds. Mid-April to June and October to mid-December a rainy periods in the area.
